Dinner #182: 28/1/2013

So I got one home cooked meal, and then I had to go and see some bands again. Went to the Big Day Out today. First time in ages. Bought tix before we planned our Melbourne trip because it was the only way wee were going to get to see Band of Horses. Then we decided to go to Melbourne and see them. But I’m not complaining that we got to see them twice because they were rad. I even made my way to the front of the stage which was impressive.
There were a lot of excited 16 year old pushing and yelling, but, young people these days have the attention span of a fly, so most got bored after a couple of songs and left. This was good news for me as I got to take their spot. Really enjoyed BOH’s set, despite being soaked by cups of water being thrown through the air and the aforementioned 16 year olds. The whole day was good actually.
Yeah Yeah Yeah’s were particularly entertaining. And the Killers provided me with many moments of mirth with their bizarrely lame lyrics and Las Vegas-ness.
The only disappointment in the day came in the form of dinner. After hearing (well reading, actually) the BDO harp on and on for ages about “Chow Town” and how good the food was and blah, blah, blah….I was understandably excited. Festivals are notorious for having rubbish food, and the thought of a decent meal after a day in the sun watching bands was something I was looking forward too. We scoped out the options earlier in the day – Gourmet sausages in buns, tacos, things with pork belly and rice and other such things. All looked and smelled good. But here’s the thing : when it actually came to dinner time (around 7pm, a couple of songs into the Killers set) THEY WERE SOLD OUT OF EVERYTHING! Lame! I mean, did they not know that there was going to be thousands of hungry people wanting food? There was only one stall left selling tacos and quesadillas, so despite the queue of other hungry punters we decided to get them. I got a pork taco, Steve got a beef quesadilla. We sat on plastic chairs and watched the Killers from afar and waited for them to be made. They ended up being quite tasty, even though they look a bit scabby. The tortillas were freshly made though, you could tell.

It wasn’t really enough food though, but instead of tracking down a bucket of chips from somewhere, we ate our museli bars that we’d brought.

Very disappointing “Chow Town”. I expected more.

After an arduous trip home on a tightly packed train with a detour through the city we made it home, where we supplemented our dinner with a late night snack of cheese and crackers and Jägermeister. It was a good day.
