I’ve been watching too many episodes of Sarah Wiener’s cooking show recently. That, coupled with our very rapidly approaching trip to Europe has made me all excited for all things German cooking. So I have decided to have a go at making Späezle tonight. My mum used to make it quite a bit, but I’ve never tried before. For those who don’t know, it’s basically a basic pasta dough that is then dropped through a colander or similar type implement into boiling water. I guess I bit like a a mix between pasta and gnocchi. Then it’s fried up in (more often than not) butter. I’m going to add breadcrumbs, parsley and speck too.
Stage one seems to have been successful.
Though I was a bit disappointed that the only flour I had in the pantry was some crap Homebrand stuff that I bought because it was cheap to make play dough with. And before you start snorting under your breath about “it’s all the same …”… Blah blah blah, well I can tell you it’s not, and the quality of the flour can make a big difference to a meal.
It’s looking good so far!
And here it is! Served with carrots and sauerkraut! (It tastes pretty good too!)
