Surprise! Bonus day in New York!

Breakfast at the hotel in Bethlehem, bright and early so we could do the 1 1/2 hour drive in to Newark to catch our flight to Singapore. Breakfast was pretty good and the hotel was quite amazing. Wish we could’ve stayed longer!

Bethlehem was such a cute little town too – would have loved to explore it. We will have to return!

And just like that we were off driving again – Newark bound! We were quite surprised at how green and mountainous the area was even right up to about 5 minutes away from Newark.

Also Waffle House
Green highways

Made it to Newark. Dropped off car. Nice car.

Caught airport train to correct terminal and tried to find Singapore Airlines to check in. Can’t find Singapore Airlines counter, despite signs pointing us to the area. Ask several people and they sort of don’t know what we are talking about. Hmmmm….looking, looking…. Then we asked another guy – he looks at strangely and says “that flight is closed, it left at 9:30” !!!! We are like, WTF?!?! And upon further investigation, yes he is indeed correct. The flight from Newark to Singapore leaves once a day at 9:30am and it was now 10:30am. It all the kerfuffle of last nights cancelled flight out of Pittsburgh we got confused and got the time wrong.

So what to do now…?

They send a Singapore Airlines guy over to us and he says there is nothing he can do but gives us the phone number to call to see if we can rebook. Apparently there is a flight out of JFK tonight – but we would probably prefer the same flight out of Newark tomorrow. So Steve calls the number and talks to someone but we can’t even find our reservation number so it’s all getting a bit stressful…in the meantime the original guy comes over to tell us that they are sorting something out and then the big wig Singapore Airlines guy comes back and says he has booked us on tomorrows flight – at 9:30 am NOT 12:50pm ok? A 12:50 flight does not exist. Phew. We did lose our extra leg room seats but beggars can’t be choosers at this point in time so we were just very grateful to get on the plane.

What else is there to do now? Decided to go check in to the Holiday Inn Express that we were meant to stay in last night and reassess the situation.

Holiday Inn kindly checked us in early, but it was a bit drab and depressing in the hotel plus we needed food and an airport hotel in Newark, New Jersey isn’t exactly flush with tasty food options.

Then we had what was probably the best idea of our lives – let’s catch an Uber in to Manhattan and enjoy one last day in New York! Genius!

We decided to head to Chelsea Market because we wanted a lobster roll and I saw a place there that looked good. Plus there is a few places to chill around there.

Driving from Jersey to Manhattan

We wasted no time getting a lobster roll each at the Lobster Place in Chelsea Market. It was really busy there today.

Deliciousness

After lunch we thought we would go chill up on the Highline. Nice idea in theory – had it not been insanely hot and humid today. Like unbearably hot. And I like the hot. Didn’t help that we were wearing jeans.

Hot in the city

We hung around there for a bit until we could bear the heat no longer and went off in search of ice cream. We found a Van Leewin’s about a 10 minute walk away, which was almost too much, but we made it and ordered some very large servings of ice cream. It was surprisingly quiet in the ice cream shop.

The ice cream was good but perhaps a little too much. I was sooooo full from it and felt like I never needed to eat again.

We wandered down to the river hoping it’d be a little cooler there. It wasn’t. In fact I think it was hotter. We found this little man made beach area with chairs under umbrellas and sat there for quite a while and almost fell asleep – it had been a long day after all. There were all these geese hanging around trying to get cool too.

We got really hot so went over to Pier 51 which is an enclosed food market owned by Google. To be honest it’s pretty weird in there but we knew there’d be couches and air conditioning so went in there to chill out and cool off a bit.

After a while there we decided we should probably head back to the hotel, we were quite tired and wanted an early night too. So after another quick wander through Chelsea Market we jumped in an Uber and headed back to the other side of the river.

Did a bit of packing, set multiple alarms for the next morning and fell asleep by 9pm.
