Lakes of Covadonga Take 2

Ok – time to try to get the lake again today. The sun was shining and it looked like a glorious day. We had our toast breakfast at the hotel before heading down to the town at the bottom of the mountain. We picked up some lunch supplies and stopped for a coffee as well. We could get used to this.

Sunny mountain days

After coffee, we drove for about an hour to where the bus stop was to take us up to the lakes. It was a lot busier there today but luckily we were able to get a parking spot. After some initial confusion, we soon found the bus stop and we boarded ready for our adventure.

And it actually was an adventure – the trip took about 30 minutes up a winding road through mountainous terrain – sometimes with cows and/or goats on the road. Supremely spectacular. Steve was a little scared.

It was really quite hard to capture in photos but we went very high – really cool.

At the top, there were paths to walk and lots of cows and two lakes. It was really lovely. We were hungry by this stage so we stopped to have our lunch before exploring fully – bread, cheese and jamon that we had brought with us.

Then we set off to explore. We walked around saw lots of cows – dodged lots of cow pats – also saw some sheep and a dog that showed us the way to walk.

We unfortunately had limited time up here as we had tickets for our bus trip down at 2:50pm so we tried to see as much as we could in the allocated time.

Before we knew it, it was time to board our bus to take us back down the mountain. However – we had a plan! The plan was to get off the bus early so we could see the cathedral etc and then walk back to our car. The first part of our plan was a success – and so we managed to see all the things we missed yesterday.

It was time for coffee now. I mean it was like 5pm or something but apparently that is coffee time here so we just go with it. We went into a cafe and ordered some coffees with ice – because that’s totally a thing – you get your hot coffee and pour it over some ice in to a glass! Best ever!

Coffees successfully consumed we started our decent down the hill to our car – it took about 20 minutes so not too bad. About half way down, I thought I saw a stick on the ground but OH NO IT WAS NOT A STICK! It was some kind of disgusting giant black slug and no there isn’t a photo it because I ran away from it so fast and it was so gross I had nightmares about it that night.

Ok…back at the car we headed to Las Arenas for dinner but got sidetracked by some alcoholic beverages at a local bar.

Our plan was to get some dinner here but for some reason (it was a Tuesday night) everything was closed/closing/not serving food – who knows how these things work? Not us.

So we headed back up the mountain to our accommodation and had dinner there. Luckily they were serving Asturian Bean stew cos that’s what we wanted. Yes, bean stew three nights in a row…but who knows if/when we will ever be back again. So delicious.

After dinner we walked up a nearby hill briefly and I nearly rolled my ankle but I think I’m ok, so don’t worry. We decided it was best to not continue on and go back to our room. I mean it was like 10:30 or something by now anyway – but it’s really hard to tell when it stays light so late.

Mountains are the best. We have to leave tomorrow- I’m gonna miss this little town.
