Traffic Jam Chips

Our last day in Espanol. Little bit sad. It’s cold and miserable at home. But it’s been a good trip and I guess we need to go home.

Last breakfast at Cases Altes de Posada. We beat everyone down to breakfast today.

But soon we were joined by the loud group of ladies on some sort of corporate retreat, so we took our coffees out on to the balcony.

Last random photos at the hotel

Said our goodbye’s to the Fabada’s.

And then it was time to be on our way. Byyyyeeee!

We were driving to a town called Castelldefels today, which is basically an outer suburb of Barcelona. Well, it’s near the airport so we thought it’d be easier to stay there tonight rather than drive in to Barcelona proper. Although we were kinda wishing we had one last night in Barcelona because we did love it.

The drive through the mountains was scenic as always.

We stopped for coffee and croissants at a mountain side cafe/hotel. It’s taken us 4 weeks to work out that you stop for coffee when you see it. You do not wait until you “feel like having a coffee” because that will most likely be 2pm and everything will be closed for siesta by then.

It proved to be a great decision and we really enjoyed our stop here, especially listening to the ‘80’s hits being played over the speakers. Again, we didn’t want to leave. Top rated coffee stop.

Cafe Leche con helio poured successfully!

As we drove towards Barcelona we saw an incredible mountain range appear as if from out of nowhere. It’s Montserrat!!! It looked so cool. We originally planned to stop there on route to Barcelona today, but realised we didn’t really have time. Also, it was Sunday and was likely to have been insanely busy.

But!!! Look at those mountains!!!

They look so weird

We took a bit of a detour and drove in to the Monserat train station. We briefly toyed with idea of either driving up or catching the train up…but…we really didn’t have the time…next time this will be a must do. It’s good leaving knowing there’s more to do, right?

Super cool mountains

We were almost in to Castelldefels when we got held up in traffic. I was starving because we hadn’t really had lunch because, siesta, so I got these chips out. Traffic jam chips. The best kind.

We checked in to the Ibis Hotel at Castelldefels and set off in search of lunch. There was a shopping mall just across the road, so we thought surely there will be something in there for us. We went to this burger place and sat in there for about 15 minutes – they were really overwhelmed in there and customers were wondering where their meals were that they ordered. There was one poor guy trying to do everything. We decided it was best for us to leave as it would’ve likely been hours before we got served. Also, I don’t know how they could possibly make good food being that overwhelmed.

Did not order

Instead we bought some yogurts and bananas from the Mercadona and ate them at the tables in the car park of the Ibis Hotel whilst watching a guy load an EV on to a tow truck. (It was so hot, honestly that guy deserved a medal) Yeh! Now we’re really living!

We finalised some of our packing and then went for a drive to the coast. I have barely seen the southern coast in all this time! We first went to a place called Stiges which was about a 15 minute drive away. It looked cool but was super busy so we couldn’t get a parking spot in the centre of it all. We found a spot by the harbour and had a look around. Most of the restaurants weren’t open yet, and I still didn’t get to see the beach really. But it was quite cute around there. It reminded me of Yanchep in the ‘80’s.

Spanish charm

We decided to drive back to the beach at Castelldefels because that was closer to our hotel. The plan was to get some dinner and just chill for a bit.

We chose the coastal route to get there – the GPS did not want to let us drive this way but we persisted. We realised why it didn’t want us to go this way – bumper to bumper traffic along a windy mountain road on the edge of the ocean. It was spectacular! But slow going. Apparently this is what everyone does on a Sunday night.

We eventually made it to Castelldefels and even managed to find a parking spot. But as we approached the beach…we realised this place was not for us. Honestly, and sorry for my language, but the place was an absolute shitshow. I don’t know how else to explain it!!! Streets and streets of vendors selling their garbage bootleg Football jerseys and Nike shoes – and worst of all – people were actually buying it! We walked down to the beach which was nice enough (but very busy) had a bit of a look, decided we really didn’t want to get dinner here, headed back to the car and left.

Fun in the sun

And then do you know what we did? We went back to the hotel, walked over to the shopping mall and had McDonalds for dinner. Yes, we were defeated and hungry. But I got a cute Hello Kitty x Njnja Turtle toy, so it was totally worth it. McDonald’s is kind of expensive though isn’t it?

Cos everybody’s got to grow up. Everybody? Are you sure?

Back to the hotel – our last night in Spain.
