So, not all that long ago, before the whole world went spiraling into disarray and we were still allowed to visit shops, I discovered there was a Daiso store in Perth. This is something I think may have been deliberately kept from me, but I am not making any accusations here. For those who do not know, Daiso is a popular store in Japan where every item is 100 yen (roughly $1). So, yes it’s kind of like the $2 stores we have here, or the Reject Shop or something like that, except with one clear difference. Daiso is ACTUALLY GOOD. The products they sell are of decent quality and are very useful. They stock so many different items – the kind of things that you don’t even know you need until you see them and then wonder how you ever lived without them.

Anyway…there have been Daiso stores in the Eastern States of Australia for some time now – they are a bit pricier – everything is $2.80 if I remember correctly. But how was I not aware that one had quietly opened at Carousel Shopping Centre in Cannington???? I mean, it’s not like I EVER shop at Carousel. It’s not exactly my local. (FYI – I did used to work at The Disney Store there many moons ago however)

Luckily when I found out about the Daiso store I was still on my Christmas School Holidays – so I jumped in my car and drove out there. It didn’t disappoint. Although apparently as with all things Perth, it’s more expensive- everything is $3.80. I didn’t waste any time buying a whole lot of essential items (mostly kitchen gadgets) but one of the coolest things I picked up was this little sushi maker contraption.

This is what happens….you cook some rice and then you fill half of the plastic contraption with rice.

Then you place your desired fillings on the rice.

Then cover the fillings with rice and close up the lid. And then….this is where the fun begins!!!! Shake shake shake!!!!

And then as if by magic you have a sushi roll! But what’s a sushi roll without nori you ask? Well I am glad you asked, because whoever made this contraption has thought of everything. The next step is to get a piece of nori, and slide it into the little slot and then….you guessed it – shake! Shake! Shake! one more time!

And then….sushi! Ta da! How cool is that?

Talk about the best $3.80 I have ever spent. I couldn’t believe how well it worked. I think it’s particularly good if you have a bit of left over rice and you want to make up a couple of sushi rolls.

Very clever device. I give it five stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Oh and when we are all allowed to go to the shops again, I highly recommend a trip to Daiso.
