Save Travels

We have to head back to Reykjavik today. I wish we could keep driving around the ring road and go all the way around Iceland but, alas, we do not have enough time. I mean, theoretically we could, but it would be a rush and we don’t like to rush.

After breakfast and coffee we began our return journey. This was our chance to do all the things we missed on the way down. Well some of the things. Nobody can do all of the things. There is too many.

We stopped at a random road that went towards the mountains and went on the trail there and stumbled across more random glaciers. Super cool.

We drove on and stopped at another place (I can’t remember what they are all called sorry) and there were more cool glaciers and it was very epic.

We stopped at a third place and paid for parking but then realised all the hikes were too long and we didn’t have time to do any of them. Bit of a bummer because parking wasn’t cheap. We decided to spend more money on some rather average ice creams and eat them in the sun and get the most out of our parking.

Time was marching on by now and we had to get going. But we needed lunch so we headed to Vik for lunch – we decided to go back to the brewery we went to when we were in town the other day. It was like 3pm by this stage and we were starving!

We also went back to Skool Beans for an afternoon coffee. It was much busier there today. Customers had many, many questions about everything. Sometimes I wonder how people make it in the world.

Coffees had, our next stop was Reynisfjara – we tried to go there the other night when we were staying nearby by bailed because we didn’t want to pay the parking fee (we’d already paid about $2000 in parking fees that day) but now we regretted it as it was super busy – the other night no one was here. Oh well. We went to see the Basalt columns and the tourists getting too close to the sneaker waves – luckily we didn’t see any one get dragged out to sea.

Cool cliffs

Ok time to get moving…ah but should we stop at Dyrholaey one more time, *just* in case there are more puffins, I mean it is right here.

Yes we did stop. And yes there were puffins. We even saw some close up.

Flying puffins

Ok time to get moving. Time is marching on and we still have a 2 hour drive to get to Reykjavik.

Oh wait, there’s some cute Icelandic horses and you can get up right close to them!

Majestic

Ok this time for realisies, no more stops until Reykjavik.

We got stuck in some nasty traffic and got there by about 9:30pm.

We found parking and dropped our stuff in at our hotel (we are staying at the same place we stayed 3 years ago – love it here, it’s good to be back)

We wasted no time in seeing some Reykavik cats and we had pizza for dinner at about 10:30pm – “Spanish dinner time”
