Slides and socks

We hired bikes today! We are sick of walking, it takes too long! We had a bit of a slower start to the morning than we wanted to (out too late last night) but what can you do?

We had a day trip planned for today. After we picked up our bikes we got on a train bound for Helsingborg- which is about an hour north of Malmo.

We were lucky we got in the train as it was really busy – Saturday and a beautiful sunny day, seems everyone was day tripping.

An hour on the train is quite a long time and we experienced all manner of events – soda beverages being spilt and covering the train floor, passengers being denied entry because the train was full, excited children squealing, cute Japanese child waving goodbye to us, that was about it really, so ok, nothing too out of the ordinary really.

When we got in to Helsingor it was much larger than I had envisaged- and wondered if we had made a huge mistake. We cycled up to a park and snacked on a Mars Bar (FYI Swedish Mars Bars are less sweet than Australian ones) whilst we pondered our next move.

We saw a whole lot of food tents set up in front of a castle and went to investigate. Some sort of foodie event, or is this just everyday in Helsingborg? Who knows. Whatever all the food looked delicious. We checked out all the stands but Steve had his eye on this prawn puffy pizza type thing he saw a lady with. We eventually found it – it was a Polish Langos. A deep fried yeast pastry type ensemble topped with either savoury or sweet treats. I wasn’t entirely convinced but we decided to share one.

Shrimp Langos

Well…I was wrong…it was so delicious. So delicious. I wondered why I had not heard of such a thing before. It was light and crispy and pretty much the best thing ever.

At one point we were reading the menu and it said Redonion cheese and we were wondering what redonion was…we eventually figured it out.

It was really hot so we had a lemonade as well and then climbed up some stairs to see a castle.

Pretty cool little town really. We needed a coffee by now so we searched out a place I wanted to visit because I had seen it on the internet. It’s the oldest cafe here or something. I don’t know, I can’t remember. Anyway, it was really cute and the coffee was good.

Coffee had, we headed down to the coast to see the beach.

First though, we saw bunnies.

Then we found the coast and it was going off! People everywhere sunbathing and swimming and just hanging out having the time of their lives. We rode along the coast for a while.

I didn’t really take many photos as I was busy riding. Also there were many semi clad people and they really probably don’t want to feature on my blog.

By now, time was marching on, and we were far from home. So this was the plan – catch the ferry across the water to Helsingor in Denmark and then catch the train back down to Copenhagen.

Once we found the ferry station (a task in itself) we were then told because we had bikes we had to go and line up with the cars to get on the ferry. So we rode all the way around and went and lined up with the cars and trucks and buses waiting to board. It was pretty cool.

Once on board we went to buy a mineral water because we were really hot and people were buying beers and multiple hotdogs and wine and duty free goods. We thought “how long is this ferry trip?” We went out on to the deck, had like 2 sips of our waters, admired the fashion of the young Danish males (socks and slides) and then we had to go back down to our bikes to get ready to leave. Like really, the trip must have been 10 minutes, max. I don’t know how everyone ate all that food and drink in the that time.

Socks and slides Y/N ?

The we were in Denmark.

We had a little ride around Helsingor – tried to ride to the castle – Hamlets castle I’ll have you know – but it was further than we thought and the day was escaping us. So we just rode around the old town and then decided to get back on the train towards Copenhagen, except we turned down a little alley and we saw all the people lining up for ice cream! We HAD to stop for one.

Castle in distance

Oh actually – before the ice cream scenario – we rode up to another food hall type place. It was really cool and had a huge warehouse of couches that you could just sit in and hang out and eat your food if you so chose to. All the food looked great too. Unfortunately there is only so much one can eat and we weren’t hungry so didn’t have anything.

Ok, back to the ice cream. As we lined up we saw all the people coming out with their ice creams – some had soft serve ice cream AND scoops of ice cream. Yes, this is something I approve of.

Just get a closer look at that

Now that we had eaten more ice cream than we need for the rest of our lives, we got back in the train bound for Copenhagen.

In Copenhagen we decided to head back up to the Reffen area again because we enjoyed it yesterday and we had bikes today so we didn’t have to walk.

It was much busier there (and messier) today- I guess it was Saturday night. We got some drinks and tried to find a place to sit. We sat up near the DJ area and we were surrounded by Danish bro’s.

When it came time for dinner, Steve got pasta and I got grilled meats and vegetables from the Kurdish place. Really delicious and tasty.

There was a band playing tonight that everyone was enjoying but they were quite loud and it kind of changed the atmosphere there. Also the band was instrumental with flute and saxophone – to be honest, it was all a bit fruity and weird for our liking.

After dinner we got a couple more drinks and went down to see the sunset but the views were average.

We went back up to our Danish bro hang out and my beer got spilt which was a bit sad but in the end probably best for everyone.

Sad and beer less

As the sun set we rode back to Copenhagen central station and caught the train back to Malmo. It was quite late by now.

Another long day in Sweden and Denmark. Looks like we won’t be getting up early to beat the mad buffet rush tomorrow morning.
